Setting Up Your Timpani

In the United States, timpani are typically set up from largest to smallest with the largest drum on the left and the smallest on the right. The drums should form an arc or half-circle with the timpanist at the center, leaving a small space between each drum and with the pedals of each timpano pointed toward the musician. Like any instrument, the drums should be adjusted to the quality playing posture of the player rather than adjusting the body. The beating spot of every drum should be within easy reach simply rotating from the waist without the player having to shift his or her feet.

The timpanist should always be able to see the heads of the drums, the music, and the conductor; the player's line of sight should go through the music stand to the conductor. If the music calls for many or fast tuning changes the player should use a stool so that he or she has the use of both feet. Adjust the stool so that the heads of the drums are just beneath waist level.
