Annual Timpani Care
The following care items should be done at least once or twice a year:
-
Lubricate the tension rod threads, friction points around the pedal, and the wheels. Use machine oil or penetrating oil such as WD-40
-
Use the knob to adjust the balanced action on the pedal. There should be a balance between the tension on the head and the tension on the pedal. Avoid using the knob to forch a loose head to hold pitch
To prolong the life of your timpani and heads, have a professional timpanist rotate and adjust the heads every couple of years. Timpani heads develop divots, dents, and scratches over time which can affect the tone quality and resonance of the instrument. Find the smoothest surface on the head and rotate it toward to pedal to serve as a new beating point. While the head is off, this person can clean and lubricate parts inside of the bowl, and they can re-tune the fundamental pitch using the lugs.
Change heads as necessary, but every two to three years if possible.
